Cornerstone Grenache
The Cornerstone has gradually changed its flavor over the years as Michael worked to rejuvenate the ancient vines. Over the last few vintages, the wine has moved away from the pretty roses-and berries Cotes-du-Rhone style, and developed into more of a Spanish-style Grenache, big, complex and intense. On the nose, it displays intriguing notes of leather, Grandma’s cedar spice box and cool black tea, complemented by subtle, background oak from its 16 months in seasoned French barrels. The palate is lithe and viscous, with 15.5% alcohol providing a round, luscious mouthfeel. After the taut, dry tannins subside, there’s a delicious wave of strawberry and raspberry flavors. As with all the Greenock Creek releases, the stamp of terroir on the Cornerstone is unmistakable, reflecting the flinty, mineral nature of the soil (a thin layer of topsoil over fragmented quartz).

Open and decant this one several hours before serving. Let it breathe for a while, and you’ll be charmed by the fragrant rosy character it eventually releases. It will cellar for twelve years easily, up to fifteen.
