SCHOOL BLOCK
The 2001 School Block is a blend comprising 60% Shiraz, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Merlot. The fruit was harvested from vines planted on the site of the old McLaren Flat schoolhouse, built back in 1855; this land has been in the possession of the Scarpantoni family for over quarter of a century. The vines growing there now range in age from five to forty years old, yielding between three and six tonnes to the acre. 2001 was a very good year for fruit flavors and balance, and this fruit-driven style is an excellent example of the vintage.

Judicious use of a mixture of French and American, new and used barrels has resulted in a wine with pronounced but balanced oak character on the palate, working harmoniously with the rich sweet fruit combination and the balanced tannin. The School Block displays a good depth and an excellent length and finish. Displaying a spicy, minty nose and ripe blackcurrant flavors on the palate, it is perfect with lighter red meat dishes.
