Garnacha Grenache
Garnacha is the term used in Spain for the grape variety we know as Grenache, and in fact where the largest acreage of this grape is grown. Previously this wine had been known as ‘Old Vine Grenache’ and ‘Garnacha Old Vine Grenache’, in both instances relating to the small block of dry-grown Grenache (planted in the 1920s) from which it was sourced. In 2002 the fruit from this block formed the backbone of our special 75th anniversary wine G3, together with our ’02 Draycott Shiraz and a small parcel of ’02 Mourvedre.

From now on it will be known as GARNACHA Dry-Grown Grenache as, starting with the ’03 vintage, we’re incorporating some younger (also dry-grown) Grenache growing right next to the old vine block, and in fact propagated from cuttings taken from the old vines, with the very same vineyard practices employed. As the old vine portion in this wine is approx. 82% (and therefore under the 85% cut off level) we’ve acknowledged our compliance by changing to the descriptor ‘Dry Grown Grenache’.
