It’s a great idea, and they’ve pulled it off admirably. Rather than sell off part of their fruit to other wineries, Majella are keeping more of their wonderful, estate, Coonawarra fruit for themselves. The wine also commemorates the tragic death of Matthew Lynn, who was involved in a hit-run car accident earlier this year, and died – heartbreakingly – two weeks later in hospital. The wine is very low in oak and very high in fruit, a smidge vanillin oak showing faintly through the mid palate but otherwise brambly blackcurrant demands all the attention. Juicy, raw, smooth textured, cherried fruit also plays a part – as a quaffer, This is damn good juice.
