Whistling Eagle is located in Heathcote, in Victoria, some 60 miles northwest of Melbourne. Ian Rathjen’s vineyard has the region’s characteristic red Cambrian soils (though they are known, confusingly, as Cambrian greenstones). Originally known as a grower, he now makes Eagles Blood Shiraz with fruit from six- to 10-year-old vines on his property that yield no more than two tons per acre.
