Five years ago, Doug Govan planted cuttings of old Grenache, Shiraz and Mataro (or Mourvedre) vines and from friends’ properties on the hillsides around his 1858 hotel on the southern edge of McLaren Vale. The first very limited releases from Rudderless—250 cases of the Grenache-Shiraz-Mataro blend and just 70 cases of the 100% Grenache—are due in 2007. The wines were made by Justin McNamee from grapes picked by the hotel staff.
